The 2017 Spurgeon Neel Writing Award was presented at the recent Foundation Board meeting on 4 May 2018.  This year’s winner, chosen from among a competitive field, was Justin Barr, MD, PhD on the staff at Department of Surgery, Duke University Medical Center.  His essay entitled “America’s Guerilla Hospitals in the Vietnam War” won the competition.   The award plaque and a check for $1000 was presented, via telelink, to Dr. Barr by Mrs Alice Neel, a long-time member of the Foundation Board.  The competition was founded in honor or Gen Spurgeon Neel to help preserve interest in academic research and writing on topics of military medicine.  The Museum Foundation sponsors the annual award.
